DSS Had No Business To Raid Corrupt Judges’ Homes , EFCC Says

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has stated that the Department of State Security Services (DSS) went beyond its purview by raiding the residences of judges suspected to have been involved in acts of corruption.

Following widespread criticism of its raid on the residences of some judges, the DSS had justified its actions by asserting that the alleged corrupt actions of the judges was a threat to national security.

But the anti-graft commission noted that corruption is an economic crime, and does not constitute a threat to national security, which is the purview of the DSS.

Acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu stated this on Thursday during the hearing of an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives looking into cases of invasion of property and arrest of persons by the DSS “outside its purview” from May 2015 to date.

Magu who was represented by an Assistant Director (Prosecution) of the commission, Mr. Ojogbane Jonson, told the committee that “bribery and corruption are for personal gain, and what it has affected in my view is not security, but development.

“It is not about the internal security, which the DSS runs, what it does is to rob us of our commonwealth.

“I am not aware of any issue they (DSS) have been involved in that has elicited as much criticism as this one. It is not much because people are against them fighting corruption but the methodology.”

But the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Crimes Commission (ICPC) Mr. Ekpo Nta, threw his weight behind the DSS, asserting, that the National Security Agencies Act conferred powers on the agency to raid any property in the country.

According to him, both agencies had similar powers, and do not answer to the other, except in cases involving inter-agency cooperation.

The committee chaired by a former House Deputy Minority Whip, Mr. Garba Dhatti threatened to issue a warrant for the arrest of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The committee frowned at Malami for failing to honour its invitation, even after he failed to appear the previous day, and did not send anyone to represent him.

Dhatti, lamented that Malami is the only official among the key persons invited, who had ignored the committee, and members resolved after a brief consultation that he should appear unfailingly on Tuesday, next week, or risk being arrested.

Dhatti stated, “All the persons we invited have submitted their memoranda and they also appeared before the committees.

“The affected judges submitted their memoranda and some of them even came here. The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, the Code of Conduct Bureau, they came.

“The DSS Director-General (Lawal Daura) is here with us and the EFCC has made an appearance too.

“But, the committee is disturbed by the failure of the AGF to appear or to deem it fit to reply us by sending a memorandum to the committee.

“As the chief law officer of the country, he should know the consequences of his actions. We wrote him and we also summoned him, but he has ignored the committee.

Army Flags Off ‘Operation Rescue Finale’ In Sambisa Forest

The Nigerian Army has flagged off another clearance operation in the Sambisa forest tagged “Operation Rescue Finale”.

The Theatre Commander of the counter insurgency war tagged Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, disclosed this to journalists in a news conference in Maiduguri.

Irabor said the focus of the latest operation on Sambisa is to rescue Chibok girls and other hostages and also rid the forest of remnants of insurgents inhabiting there.

The Theatre Commander said that operations were temporarily suspended in the Sambisa forest due to terrain issues occasioned by the rains.

According to him, the troops have been empowered and have the operational capacity to carry out the task ahead.

“The focus of the operation is to rescue the Chibok girls and every other hostage that is in Sambisa and ensure that every other element of the Boko Haram has been displaced. We’ll take them out completely.

“Primarily, commitment of targets by artillery and the air component is already in progress; the subsidiary operations which are ally to the operation is ongoing,” he noted.

Irabor has also cautioned against rushing to the social or mainstream media with information acquired about soldiers killed in battle, suing for patriotism and empathy.

He believes the impact of recent suicide bombings in the capital city of Borno state is due to alertness of troops cooperating with other agencies which has led to the arrest of a female suicide bomber by the Police.

The arrested girl, according to the Theatre Commander has been giving the Army useful information.

As part of the success story of ongoing operations, the Theatre Commander added that between the months of October and November, a total of 5,235 hostages have been rescued consisting of 2,054 children and 1560 women.

The Army for the umpteenth time also warned insurgents to take advantage of the “Operation Safe Corridor” and surrender or face execution.

Police Promise Osun Community Tighter Security After Robbers’ Threat

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr Fimihan Adeoye, has met the people of Kelebe communities, to sensitize them on the necessary moves required to scuttle the plans of the armed robbers who had threatened to strike in the community.

Mr Adeoye, who visited the communities along with the officers in charge of Criminal Investigation Department and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, the Osogbo Area Commander and the Police Public Relation Officer, assured the people of Kelebe communities of adequate security.

The CP also visited the palace of the traditional ruler of Kelebe, as well as the house of the Chairman of landlord’s association, where he discussed security tips with stakeholders in the communities and told them to always call the Police whenever they notice any suspicious movement.

Furthermore, he advised the traditional ruler and the chairman of the landlords association, to ensure that the bushes in the uncompleted buildings in the communities are cleared so that it would not serve as hideout for criminals.

“I am here today to make it clear to you people that the Police is always ready and alert to attend to all sensitive issues that relate to the security of the people of Osun state‎.

“We are well aware of the tension among the people of Kelebe now, but I want you to know that the Police is ready to ensure that lives are not lost and properties are well secured.

“The Police remain the friend of the people at all times. Please if you observe any suspicious move, just get in touch with the Police and we will get the person arrested.

“We are ever ready to serve you all the time. Your safety is paramount to us,” CP Fimihan emphasised.

While the people of the area commended the Commissioner of Police for his quick intervention, traditional ruler of Kelebe Community complained that the Otaefun Police Division was too far from Kelebe and demanded for a police post at Kelebe community.

A letter supposedly written by armed robbers was circulated in the area, two weeks before the CP’s visit, notifying the residents of the community about a proposed visit by the armed robbers.

The letter stirred up tension in the Kelebe communities as some of the residents had started relocating from the area because of the impending robbery attack.

Grandfather Of Corruption Obasanjo – House of Reps

The House of Representatives has described former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo as the ‘grandfather of corruption’ and accused him of introducing corruption to the National Assembly in 1999.

This comes as a reaction to Obasanjo’s criticism of the National Assembly at an event on Wednesday, where he asked the federal government to extend its anti-corruption fight to the legislature.

Obasanjo stunned listeners with his address on ‘Governance and Accountability’, dwelling on the need for government to replicate the anti-corruption fight in the judiciary in the legislature.

The elder statesman shared some recommendations on how to wipe out corruption in the legislature.

At a press conference by the Chairman of House Committee on Media and Publicity, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, on Thursday, the House described the ex-president as a blackmailer, acting as a lifetime opposition leader.

“He ventured to accuse the National Assembly of budget padding, accused the House of criminal activities of threatening the life of a “whistleblower”, lampooned constituency projects which he approved as President, ventured to discuss the budget of National Assembly which is highly underfunded?

“The House of Representatives would ordinarily not join issues with the former President as he has held an office that deserves respect and reverence.

“However, because of the material misstatement of facts, outright lies and falsehoods, and mischievous innuendo introduced in his statement, we are left with no option but to correct him.”

Mr Namdas went on to address all issues raised by the ex-President during the controversial lecture:

“We have repeatedly maintained that there was no “padding” of the 2016 Appropriation Act, which is a legitimate document passed by the National Assembly, authenticated by the Clerk to the National Assembly as provided in the Acts Authentication Act and assented to by Mr. President…

For the avoidance of doubt, there is no crime that was committed by the National Assembly by exercising its constitutional function of appropriation. If Chief Obasanjo has an issue with the execution of the 2016 Budget or indeed other Appropriation Acts, he should direct his anger elsewhere.

“He claimed that the National Assembly Budget is very high, when by all standards, the National Assembly is grossly underfunded and is hampered from effectively and legitimately carrying out its constitutionally assigned functions. The National Assembly Budget funds a bureaucracy of about 5,000 civil servants. It has some other agencies under its preview such as the National Assembly Service Commission with its own staff of about 500, even the Public Complaints Commission is now a parastatal of the National Assembly. National Assembly Budget also funds the National Institute for Legislative Studies, which is a legislative think-tank and highly rated academic institution that serves both National and State Houses of Assembly and even international legislators.

“All these agencies also have their capital budget including development of their headquarters, procurement of office equipment, procurement of regular items for running their offices; the National Assembly maintain legislative aides of about 3,000 in number, that aid the work of the Assembly; it also conducts regular public hearings involving the media and stakeholders and oversight activities, involving huge sums of money. The cost implications of running the National Assembly is high because of the nature of our Presidential democracy.

“Then of course, there are 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives that require proper equipment to function effectively. They require adequate travel and transport support to carry out legislative functions. The National Assembly also has buildings and offices to build and maintain. National Assembly staff and members attend conferences, trainings, seminars to keep abreast of legislative developments worldwide. The activities are very encompassing and expensive.

“It is also unbecoming of a former President to quote figures of sums of money that are factually incorrect. No member of the House of Representatives receives N10m every month. The salaries and allowances of members of the House are as determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

“Of course further sums of money are spent as running costs, that is, the cost of running the office of a member. If a Minister, Chief Executive or Director in a Ministry travels on official duties, for instance, do you include the cost of his ticket and accommodation as part of his salary or allowances? Does the cost of stationeries and maintenance of equipment like computers used in their offices, form part of their salaries and allowances? These are some of the costs that must be taken care of by the National Assembly and the media calls these costs “jumbo pay”. For goodness sake, the National Assembly is an arm of government, not just an ordinary agency of government.

“The budget of many agencies in the Executive Branch are indeed higher than the current Budget of the National Assembly that is an arm of government. Examples abound, CBN, NNPC, NCC etc. Allowances paid to even junior staff of some of these government agencies cannot be compared to what members of National Assembly enjoy.

“Undoubtedly, the former President Obasanjo is understandably angry with the National Assembly as an institution having foiled his ambition for a third-term in office even after trying to corrupt the members with a bribe of at least N50m each. Lest we forget, the person who introduced corruption to the National Assembly is Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. He birthed the 4th Republic National Assembly with corrupt practices from day one; indeed the first day of the Republic. He bribed both PDP, ANPP and AD legislators on their inauguration in 1999 to vote against the majority candidate of PDP, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo. That was how Senator Evan Enwerem became Senate President.

“Have we forgotten the sacks of money displayed on the floor of the House of Representatives being bribe money paid by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to some Honourable members to impeach Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ghali N’abba?

“Have we forgotten that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo used his position as President to extort money from businessmen and contractors with his government to build his presidential library?

“The list of his corrupt acts while in office is endless. Unquestionably, he is the greatest corrupt person ever to hold office in Nigeria. He remains the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria and lacks the moral authority to discuss corruption or indeed abuse of office in Nigeria as he remains the most corrupt Nigerian on record.

“It is unfortunate that he has started his very familiar method of bringing down governments. He did it to Alhaji Shehu Shagari, he did it to Gen. Buhari, he did same to Gen. Babangida, he attempted to bring down Gen. Abacha before he imprisoned him for treason; he made frantic efforts to derail the government of President Ya’ardua when he couldn’t use him. He supported President Goodluck Jonathan but when he refused to take dictation, he turned against him. He supported President Buhari, but since he has sensed that Nigeria is having economic difficulties under him, he has pounced to derail his government.

“The way Chief Obasanjo talks gives the impression that he is a lifetime opposition leader who has never held any office. What did he do about the issues he raised in his 8 years as President?

“This is a man with unlimited access to President Buhari. Or is it because he has not appointed all his cronies as requested? We may never know. His stuck in trade is blackmail, subversion and treachery.

Falconets defender hospitalised in trauma unit after receiving N10,000 from NFF on return from World cup

18 year old Falconets defender, Mary Ologbosere has been referred to the traumatic unit of a hospital in Abuja after she suffered from depression following the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay the players what was due to them, after they arrived from the U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
The defender who lost her father while the Falconets were at the World Cup said the entire family were depending on her to return form the game so they could bury their dad.

However, after their return from the World Cup Wednesday afternoon, they were all shocked to have received a miserly N10,000  and instructed to return to their homes.
A shocked Ologbosere cried all through the night and had to be rushed to the hospital as a result, where she is now receiving treatment at the traumatic unit.
A team official at the Serob Legacy Hotel where the football players were lodged said:
“She is totally shattered by this heartless treatment,” It’s truly a pathetic case'.
The 10,000 Naira paid to each player is reportedly, the only money they received from the NFF since they opened training camp for the World Cup earlier this year.

The team vowed not to leave the hotel they were booked into until they receive the correct amount due to them.

Officer Mike Lopez from the Los Angeles Police Department told USA TODAY that the LAPD responded to a disturbance call at 1:20 p.m. PT Monday on North Laurel Avenue in West Hollywood. He said no crime had been committed.

LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said the fire department responded to "an unspecified medical aid request" in the 900 block of North Laurel Avenue. "An adult male, described as medically stable, was taken to an area hospital for further assessment," he said.

Neither department could identify the person involved, citing medical privacy laws

The incident comes after West, 39, ignited a Twitter storm Thursday by saying he "would've voted for Donald Trump" at a concert in Inglewood, Calif.
More recently, West cut his Saturday concert in Sacramento short after several songs, but not before calling out Beyoncé and addressing Jay Z: "Call me, brah, you still ain't call me. Jay Z, I know you got killas, please don't send them at my head. Just call me. Talk to me like a man," he said. The latter show left fans so upset that Ticketmaster refunded their tickets.
The 21 remaining tour dates that West had scheduled through New Year's Eve were canceled early Monday.

Leo Messi spoke about various matters concerning the team | MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

Leo Messi spoke about the current situation of FC Barcelona at a sponsored event on Thursday, highlighting his happiness of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League among other topics.

The Argentine says he is “at the best team in the world” that “does not depend on any single player” before also mentioning the importance of winning at Anoeta on Sunday. Here is the pick of what he said:
Reaching the knockout stage

"I am very happy with the game we played at Celtic Park, and for qualifying (to the knockout stages),which was what we were after."
Real Sociedad on Sunday

“Getting a result at Anoeta will require a great effort from the team due to their form and because we have found it difficult there over the years.”

Messi also added that “we need to win due to the last result” which was a goalless draw against Málaga.
Happy to be with the best

FG defies court as banks continue stamp duty collection

The Federal Government and its agencies have continued to defy the ruling of the Court of Appeal that the deduction of stamp duty on bank deposits is illegal.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that the Technical Committee on Stamp Duty had advised the Central Bank of Nigeria to issue a circular to the banks to stop collecting stamp duty of N50 on deposits into current accounts with value of N1,000 and above.

Although the court ruling was given on April 21, investigation showed that the apex bank had yet to issue the circular. The duty is projected to yield N2.5tn to the Federal Government per annum.

Some bankers, who spoke to our correspondents on the condition of anonymity, said they had yet to get any circular from the CBN to stop the collection.

The spokesperson for the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, told our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday that the apex bank had nothing to do with the stamp duty.

He asked our correspondent to refer every question on the subject to the Nigerian Postal Service.

The spokesperson for NIPOST, Hajiya Simbiat Lawal, was indisposed when our correspondent called her on Thursday, but she had earlier said if there was a court ruling, the organisation, as a law abiding entity, would abide by the decision of the court.

The CBN had in a January circular issued to the Deposit Money Banks in the country directed them to deduct N50 for stamp duty on every deposit in a current account amounting to N1,000 and above beginning from January 1, 2016.

The circular, which has since been implemented by the banks, was in spite of the fact that there was a subsisting issue in court on the subject.

Ruling on an appeal filed by Standard Chartered Bank against Kasmal International Services Limited and 22 others, Justice Ibrahim Saulawa and four others justices of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Judicial Division, held that the Stamp Duty Act, 2004 did not impose a duty on the banks to deduct N50 on deposits.

Kasmal International Services Limited, which belongs to Senator Buruji Kashamu, had on February 17, 2014 obtained the judgement of a Lagos High Court against the banks to the effect that that they should remit more than N6bn they were supposed to have collected on deposits since the Stamp Duty became an Act of Parliament in 2004 through it to NIPOST.

According to Kasmal, NIPOST had appointed it as an agent to collect the stamp duty on its behalf from banks and, therefore, the banks should remit the money accruing as stamp duty through it to the postal organisation.

However, in a lead judgment, Justice Saulawa held that the Stamp Duty Act imposed no such duty on the banks. In concurring rulings delivered by a panel of the Appeal Court, Justices Ejembi Eko, Adamu Jauro, Moore Adumein and Nonyerem Okoronkwo agreed in totality with the ruling delivered by Saulawa.

The appeal court set aside the ruling of the lower court delivered by justice C. J. Aneke on five grounds.

The Nigeria Police Force said that it would deploy 26,000 personnel , three helicopters, 12 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and 20 gunboats for the Nov.26 governorship election in Ondo State.

The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mr Ibrahim Idris, said this on Tuesday in Akure during a meeting he held with INEC officials and representatives of the political parties in the state.

1.64bn Fraud: EFCC closes case on former Taraba State Governor, Jolly Nyame

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 closed its case against former Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, who is standing trial before Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the FCT High Court sitting in Gudu, Abuja on charges of money laundering to the tune of N1.6billion.
Nyame is facing trial on a 41-count charge of criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of state funds to the tune of N1.64billion between 1999 and 2007 during his tenure as governor. At the resumed hearing today, counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, told the court that the prosecution had decided this morning to close the case against the former Governor.

In response, Nyame’s counsel, Omosanya Popoola, said that he would file a ‘no-case submission.’

"In view of the closure of the prosecution case, we shall be making a ‘no-case submission’ pursuant to Section 303 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act," Popoola said.

He said he would serve the prosecution with the written address next week. Justice Banjoko, thereafter adjourned to December 5 for adoption of written addresses on the ‘no-case submission’. The EFCC had during the trial which started in 2010, called 14 witnesses

Ebonyi Governor Bans Sale Of Foreign Rice In Markets (Read Details)

The Ebonyi Government is to enforce its ban on the sale of foreign rice in markets and other outlets in the State.

Governor David Umahi made the disclosure when participants of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Senior Course 39, Jaji, visited him in Abakaliki on Monday.

According to the governor, the order would soon be enforced to ensure that the residents patronised home-grown Ebonyi Rice.

personally lead a task-force, consisting of the State Executive Council members to various markets and enforce the order.

“Individuals who are selling the produce will provide certification of its quality because most of the rice brought into the state is not parboiled.

“Any rice that is not parboiled after six months turns to chaff as most of them brought into the country stay for about 10 years before being imported.

The rice then becomes poisonous and we have banned cooking of non-Ebonyi rice inside the state’s Government House, hotels and public functions.

“The Ebonyi rice still presents its unique taste even when cooked without meat and we will give you some quantities for attestation”, he said.

The governor remarked that the state had three functional rice mills and would inaugurate mills in the 13 Local Government Areas of the state before the end of 2017.

“When we conclude the inauguration, we will consult our stakeholders who show zeal and commitment but may not have money to purchase the mills.

“We will then aggregate and sell the mills to them with government maintaining about 20 per cent minimum equity shares and the stakeholders-80 per cent.

This is the type of Public Private Partnership (PPP) we will be engaging, in line with the theme of your study-`tour of the state’,” he said.

Leader of the delegation, Commodore Michael Okonkwo, said the study tour was one of the programmes that enabled participants to study the socio-economic problems that confront the country.

“The theme of the tour is: Enhancing Economic Development through Public-Private Partnership’’, as we aim at evaluating aspects of the theme that concerns Ebonyi.

Spurs Crash out of Champions League

Tottenham's hopes of reaching the Champions League last 16 were ended by Monaco, who will progress as Group E winners following a 2-1 victory at Stade Louis II on Tuesday.

Following the 1-1 draw between CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen earlier on matchday five, Spurs knew a win would keep their qualification in their own hands, while a draw would leave their hopes looking slim.

But ultimately they were on the wrong end of an eventful opening to the second period as the sides traded a trio of goals in five minutes.

Monaco had already seen Hugo Lloris save Radamel Falcao's first-half penalty but their persistence was rewarded three minutes into the second half when Djibril Sidibe headed home from close range.

Harry Kane levelled matters shortly afterwards, tucking home from the spot after Kamil Glik's clumsy tug on Dele Alli, but Monaco's reply was immediate as Thomas Lemar thumped an assured left-footed finish past Lloris from a tight angle.

Try as they might, Spurs could not conjure the equaliser that would have kept them in the competition, and their meeting with CSKA at Wembley in two weeks will decide only who finishes third and claims a place in the Europa League.

Monaco, meanwhile, will head into December's draw as group winners, with their matchday six fixture against runners-up Leverkusen of little relevance.

Spurs welcomed Alli back into their starting XI and the midfielder carved out a gilt-edged opportunity as early as the sixth minute as an incisive ball caught the Monaco backline cold and sent Son Heung-min clean through, but his attempt to round Danijel Subasic was thwarted by the goalkeeper, who pushed the ball wide to safety.

Spurs ought to have been made to pay for that miss five minutes later when a succession of poor defensive clearances culminated in Eric Dier felling Fabinho with a wild swipe inside the area.

But Lloris came to his side's rescue, saving from Falcao low to his right and a double stop from Benjamin Mendy and Valere Germain followed soon afterwards as Spurs wobbled.

Monaco continued to threaten with Lemar thumping a long-range drive that was held by Lloris before Germain arrowed a low shot narrowly wide in the 35th minute.

Glik was perhaps fortunate not to receive a red card for standing on a prone Kane right in front of the referee as the half drew to a close, but the real drama began after the restart.

Sidibe put Monaco in front, thumping in a free header from six yards on the end of a cross from Mendy, who got the better of Harry Winks down the left.

Spurs' response was swift as they pulled level four minutes later, Kane succeeding where Falcao failed in converting from the spot after Alli had been hauled down by Glik.

However, Tottenham appeared to switch off straight from kick-off.

Monaco worked the ball down the right and Fabinho's cross made its way to the opposite flank and to Lemar, who had time to take a touch and drill a low effort beyond a helpless Lloris.

The France international, formerly of Monaco's local foes Nice, somehow pulled off a scarcely believable one-handed reaction save from Glik's close-range volley, a stop to rival one made against Leverkusen in a 0-0 draw on matchday three.

Lloris was at it again soon afterwards, saving impressively from Falcao but the keeper standing firm as Spurs' outstanding performer and Alli slashing a late chance wide summed up their plight as Mauricio Pochettino's side were sent crashing out.

Sporting Lisbon 1-2 Real Madrid RECAP: Substitute Karim Benzema scores winner against 10-man hosts

Karim Benzema came to the rescue for Real Madrid on Tuesday with a late goal to earn a 2-1 win over Sporting.

Raphael Varane had given the reigning European champions the lead in the first half of their Champions League game in Portugal, but an 80th minute penalty from Adrien Silva puleld the hosts level.

However, Benzema was on hand to ensure Zinedine Zidane's men can still finish top of Group F by grabbing the late winner.

ASUU threatens to go on indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to go on an indefinite strike just as a one-week warning strike elapsed today.

The union’s meeting with the Senate on Monday had ended in a stalemate.

Ifeanyi Abada, the Chairman of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Chapter of the Academic staff Union of Universities (ASUU), made this known on Tuesday in Nsukka, Enugu State.

ASUU was left with no option than to proceed on the one-week warning strike; failure to meet our demands, we will go on an indefinite strike,” Abada said.

“The National Executive Committee (NEC) made efforts to resolve this issue with the government but government remained unyielding.

“The strike compliance in UNN is total, no lectures, no examinations, no departmental and faculty meetings, as members will not participate.

“UNN chapter will not renege on the directive of the national body until government addresses all the issues raised.

“Our monitoring team is moving round; any lecturer found teaching will be sanctioned accordingly,’’ he added.

Gunmen Kill Four NSCDC Operatives In Rivers State

Gunmen have killed four operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Omoku, Ogba-Egbemandoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The NSCDC operatives were said to be manning Nigeria Agip Oil Company in the Niger Delta community when the gunmen dressed in military camouflage stormed the place and opened fire on them.

The public relations officer of the NSCDC, Mr Micheal Oguntuase, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said it occurred on Monday evening at about 6:40 a.m. local time.

According to him, operatives of the NSCDC had engaged the gunmen in a fierce gun battle on realising that they were not military men.

“Others who were injured in the attack had been taken to a hospital for treatment,” he said.

Despite the attack, however, he reaffirmed the corps commitment to tackling pipeline vandalism and other forms of criminality around oil facilities.

The State Commandant of the Corps, Helen Amakiri, who also lamented the loss of her operatives, hinted that earlier intelligence report had suggested that the facility was going to be under attack.

She said that the agency had sent a message to the Joint Task Force for reinforcement.

According to her, when the gunmen dressed in military camouflage arrived, the operatives had thought they were sent in response to the reinforcement request.

Mrs Amakiri said the NSCDC would stop at nothing to unravel the masterminds of the attack.

She further urged the operatives of the corps to redouble their efforts in the fight against vandalism and illegal dealings in oil business in the state and stressed her resolve to stamp out all forms of illegal dealings in the oil business and every act capable of frustrating government policies in the state.

She further warned that the NSCDC would not condone further attack on its personnel and promised that the gunmen would not go unpunished as full scale investigation has commenced on the matter.

Supreme Court Dismisses Second Appeal Filed By Sheriff-Led PDP

five-member panel of justices of the Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed by the Modu-Sheriff led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asking it to evoke its disciplinary powers and disqualify the panel of the Appeal Court hearing the Ondo state PDP candidacy appeal.

In the application, counsel to the Sheriff-led PDP, Mr Beluolisa Nwufor, asked the court to set aside the November 16, 2016 proceedings of the Court of Appeal for being a nullity.

He argued further that the appellate court ought to have stayed proceedings on the matter, having been notified of an appeal against its decision at the Supreme Court.

Nwofor also prayed the court to disqualify the Appeal Court panel for holding parallel proceedings with the Supreme Court.

However, when it was pointed out to him that the said appeal is predicated on an earlier appeal which he requested to be withdrawn and which was subsequently dismissed, he insisted that the lower court judges erred.

In reaction to the application, counsel to the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led PDP, Mr Wole Olanipekun pointed that by virtues of the fact that he withdrew his applications earlier the appeal has become an academic exercise which the court ought not to entertain.

He therefore asked the court to dismiss the application.

In the lead ruling, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onoghene, said that it was very clear that the dismissal of the motions for stay in which the orders in this motions were predicated had rendered the prayers one to three, sought by the Sheriff-led PDP academic.

He also added that it was on record that the justices who were empaneled to hear the motion emanating from the lower court were not doing so in their personal capacity and as such, joining them as party is an attempt to embarrass and scandalized the court and this should not be discouraged.

He went on to add that, if applicants are allowed to continue with the pranks in this circumstance there will be no end to litigation.

“I find no merit in this application and consequently dismiss the motion and order cost of 500,000 naira to the counsel to the first three respondents  and one million naira each to each of the three judges to be paid by counsel to Sheriff, Mr Beluolisa Nwofor personally to each of the judges.

The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria who presided over the proceedings, Justice Walter Onoghene, dismissed the motion and awarded a cost of 250,000 naira against those who filed them.

Justice Onoghene ordered the Appeal Court to resume hearing because the case is a pre-election matter.

Money Laundering charge: Justice Ngwuta docked, gets N100m bail

Justice Sylvester Ngwuta
Despite stiff opposition from the Federal Government, the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Monday, released Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court on bail to the tune of N100million.

Ngwuta secured bail on a day he was docked on a 16-count criminal charge bordering on money laundering, age falsification and his alleged illegal possession of multiple international passports contrary to section 10 (1) (a) of the Immigration Act 2015.

Trial Justice James Tsoho said he was minded to released the accused jurist on bail in view of his status as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He said there was nothing before the court to show that Ngwuta had in any way, breached the administrative bail that was earlier given to him by the Department of State Service, DSS.

The defendant had shortly after he pleaded not guilty to all the charges, begged the court to grant him bail on self-recognition, pending the hearing and determination of the case against him.

Addressing the court through his lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, Ngwuta, insisted that charges against him were bailable offences.

Agabi, who is a former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, predicated the bail request on sections 32, 158 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, as well as section 35 (1) of the 1999 constitution, as amended.

Hector Bellerin has signed a long-term contract extension with Arsenal

The Spain international had been linked with a move back to Barcelona while Manchester City were also reportedly interested.
Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has signed a long-term contract extension to end speculation over his future.

The Spain international, 21, had been a target for his former side Barcelona, who saw him as a potential long-term replacement for Dani Alves, while Pep Guardiola was reportedly interested in taking him to Manchester City.

Bellerin distanced himself from a potential move back to Catalunya, though, insisting he would have stayed if he wanted to play for the Blaugrana.

While he says he has been frustrated by the Gunners turning him into a right-back, an agreement over a new contract has seemed imminent.

The new deal for Bellerin comes as a major boost to Arsenal, who are also locked in renewal negotiations with star players Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, both of whom are out of contract in 2018.

Bellerin joined Arsenal's academy from Barca in 2011 and made his debut in September 2013
